Often times the permissions of files and directories can be changed by installing plugins, moving and copying content, or simply by accident.
When permissions are incorrect you begin to experience a number of issues related to your deployment.
In order to fix the permissions, you may use the Supervisor account (and sudo) to correct the permissions manually.

At the bottom of this article, you may download a script called "fixPermissions" that when run from your home directory will set all files and directories to the correct permissions.
Follow these guidelines for correct usage of the fixPermissions script:
NOTE: It's best to set the permissions for an entire directory to ensure all files stored within are correctly set as well.
